I took a ferry from Wellington to Picton, then a couple trains, then a couple buses, ending up in Queenstown. Didn't do much at all besides sit in a seat, but it was worth it because of the scenery!

This was also my first time ever "sleeping rough"
(sleeping outside) It's very safe (and legal) to do in New Zealand, and actually a smart idea this day; the weather was perfect and I arrived late at night and had to leave early morning next day.
